LAKE EUSTIS SAILING CLUB

The Eustis High School sailors moved forward with the Interscholastic (High School) regatta at the Lake Eustis Sailing Club this past Saturday. Racing started at 10 AM with light winds and continued to 4:30 PM when the wind had increased to scattered white caps and spirited sailing.
Sixteen high schools from across central Florida including Sarasota, St. Petersburg, Jensen Beach, and Fort Lauderdale each entered an A and B team that sailed in 16 boats, changing boats after every two races for a total of 12 races. Last year, the Eustis sailors held a six boat regatta with six high school entered.
Sarasota high school is the power house in this area and they won the small regatta last year as well as this year’s bigger event. Lakewood high school was second and St. Thomas Aquinas was third.
While the Eustis sailors ended up 15th of 16, it was a step ahead. The increased traffic in a 16 boat race brought a lot of important lessons for them that are learned no other way.
In the regular racing at the sailing club, Jim McIntyre won the Wayfarer races. Dave Hepting was second and Mike Murto third. In the Flying Scot races first was Ron Baerwitz, second George Golder and third Ray Laguna. The MC scows had Andy Fox first, Jon Pomerleau second and Dave Moring third.
The Laser class was topped by Ron Krentel, with Steve Hayden second and Alejandro Illera third.. Jeffery Hayden was first youth.
Next Saturday and Sunday the sailing club will host the 4th Annual Florida Inland Lakes Youth Championship for Optimist Prams, Lasers, and Club 420 sloops.
