LAKE MONROE SAILING ASSOCIATION

This week at LMSA

Wednesday October 28th: THE LAST WEDNESDAY NIGHT RUM RACE! We would love to have as many boats as can to race for the last bottle of rum. One suggestion is that we all start earlier then the 6:30PM start time. The sunset is scheduled for 6:43 that evening and we want to make sure all boats have a change to cross the line. Come out and john us for the last rum race of the season.

Saturday October 31st: Scary Social Sail. Byron and DJ have put together a full program for this weekends Scary Social Sail. There will be a Pumpkin Race, Best Dressed Crew and a ghost ship on Lake Monroe that can only be seen at 1500 (3pm). The entrance fee for this event is a Pumpkin Pie.
Please get with DJ McCabe at 407-330-0633 to reserve a spot.

LAKE EUSTIS SAILING CLUB

The Eustis High School sailors moved forward with the Interscholastic (High School) regatta at the Lake Eustis Sailing Club this past Saturday. Racing started at 10 AM with light winds and continued to 4:30 PM when the wind had increased to scattered white caps and spirited sailing.
Sixteen high schools from across central Florida including Sarasota, St. Petersburg, Jensen Beach, and Fort Lauderdale each entered an A and B team that sailed in 16 boats, changing boats after every two races for a total of 12 races. Last year, the Eustis sailors held a six boat regatta with six high school entered.
Sarasota high school is the power house in this area and they won the small regatta last year as well as this year’s bigger event. Lakewood high school was second and St. Thomas Aquinas was third.
While the Eustis sailors ended up 15th of 16, it was a step ahead. The increased traffic in a 16 boat race brought a lot of important lessons for them that are learned no other way.
In the regular racing at the sailing club, Jim McIntyre won the Wayfarer races. Dave Hepting was second and Mike Murto third. In the Flying Scot races first was Ron Baerwitz, second George Golder and third Ray Laguna. The MC scows had Andy Fox first, Jon Pomerleau second and Dave Moring third.
The Laser class was topped by Ron Krentel, with Steve Hayden second and Alejandro Illera third.. Jeffery Hayden was first youth.
Next Saturday and Sunday the sailing club will host the 4th Annual Florida Inland Lakes Youth Championship for Optimist Prams, Lasers, and Club 420 sloops.

LAKE MONROE SAILING ASSOCIATION

GREETINGS LMSA WITCHES AND GHOULS!
This Halloween, Saturday October 31st, come out on Lake Monroe in your ghoul-ship and prepare for an afternoon of sportsmanship and partying! With an entry fee of one pumpkin pie to share, you will be eligible to win one of the most coveted LMSA awards ever presented! The three equally-weighted factors used in determining the recipient of this award are: THE PUMPKIN RACE, THE BEST DRESSED BOAT/CREW and THE BEST GHASTLY HALLOWEEN STORY.
THE PUMPKIN RACE: This will involve exchanging the pumpkin-head you are given from the Ghost Ship with at least one other boat. The object is to sail around two of the numbered Manatee Marks based on the numbered pumpkin-head you have on-board during that rounding. You will want to think through the rules presented below, because it will be the most dastardly ghoul-ship that comes out ahead.
THE BEST DRESSED BOAT/CREW: The intent here is to somehow appear “Halloweenish”. It may be how the boat is decked out or how the crew is dressed or presents themselves. This determination will be made when you first approach the Ghost Ship to get your pumpkin-head.
THE BEST PRESENTED GHASTLY HALLOWEEN STORY: Sometime after dusk, each ghoul-ship will be asked to present a scary two to five minute Halloween story to the rafted up boats. This may be a simple reading or an acted-out skit. The amount of effort that you have put into this will most likely determine the points you receive.
SO….. seek out the ghastly Ghost Ship anytime after 1500 hours. It will be anchored approximately 2 miles due north of Marina Isle at N 29 51 by W 081 16. It could well be to your advantage to not be the last one there!
1. When you (under sail) hail the Ghost Ship to “GIVE UP YER BOOTY!”, a randomly selected Halloween pumpkin-head with a number on it will be tossed to you. That number indicates the Manatee Mark that you must sail around….(unless you have exchanged pumpkin-heads before you get there!)
2. Whenever a boat is hailed from within (approximately) three of her boat-lengths, and told to “SLACK YER SHEETS!” it MUST immediately stop sailing and exchange pumpkin-heads. It is up to the requesting ghoul-ship, however, to make the approach for the pumpkin-head exchange. A seaman-like exchange will be best served, as it neither boat may continue sailing until both pumpkins have been successfully exchanged.
3. You may exchange pumpkin-heads once with as many different ghoul-ships as you like. This may occur any time after you have received your pumpkin-head from the Ghost Ship, up until the time you have successfully rounded your second Manatee Mark.
4. The pumpkin-head you have on-board when you round the second Manatee Mark is then returned directly to the Ghost Ship, and your corrected elapsed time calculated.
You are now welcome to raft up, share your goodies and pumpkin pie, and let your Happy Hours begin.
If there is insufficient wind to sail, come out and participate under power. If the weather is particularly nasty, we will most likely convene on Wolfies’ porch. In any event, come looking a little scarier than you normally are, but be sure to have a scary story to tell… and hope you don’t have to walk-the-plank!

Please RSVP to Byron (email: mertland@gmail.com, phone 732.674.3180) or DJ at (email: dj@usailflorida.com, phone 407.921.7755). We need to know how many pumpkin heads there will be....

LAKE EUSTIS SAILING CLUB

The lake winds tested the catamarans on Lake Eustis Sailing Clubs Annual Catamaran Regatta over the weekend. These are the boats with two hulls. When the wind is up a little, and they can lift the windward hull out of the water to sail on just one narrow hull in the water, they go very fast. When the wind drops and they have to pull both hulls through the water, they go very slow. Over the week end they were having patches of fast and slow all over the lake as the wind gusts and lulls were coning and going.. It tested their abilities of changing gears from fast to slow and trying to stay in the windy streaks on the water. The numbers from 40 or 50 boats of 2 years ago to 26 this past weekend was blamed on the economy with fewer sailors traveling.
Catamarans are not raced regularly at the local sailing club, but two members sailed this weekend. Luke Yates, Youth member, Optimist Pram and Laser sailor, crewed for Pete Halley of Daytona Beach on a Hobie 16 to win their division. Richard Kinnie of Ocoee and LESC member sailing an A catamaran for his second year was second in the first of 10 races ending up 6th of the 9 boats in the A catamaran fleet. Richard usually sails an MC scow at Lake Eustis, but can often be seen sailing his A cat with it’s tall square headed sail, when he practices on the lake.
First place A cat was Chris Cordes, second Rush Bird, and third was Woody Cope. There were five Hobie 16 with first place Pete Halley of Halifax SC in Daytona Beach, second was Steve Grinstead and third Mike Burley.
The other seven types of catamarans were raced against each other in two groups on time allowances, adding time to the finishes of the faster boats. The first in the non-spinnaker group with the slowest boat, a Hobie 14 with Bill Brooks. Second was John Cole sailing a Hobie Getaway and third was Mike Teal sailing a Hobie 17 Sport.
The Spinnaker fleet was lead by David Ingram sailing a Formula 18 and second place was Beth Bonifant with another Formula 18 and third was Matt McDonald in a Formula 16.
Next weekend the sailing club goes back to club races on the weekend with sailing lessons on Saturday.
