This week the Lake Monroe Sailing Association held their first Rum Race of 2009. We had 6 boats that wanted to compete but only 4 of them completed the course. The wind gods were very nice to us as they made sure that the sea breeze kicked it up to 10 our of the east. If you stayed out longer you were greeted with the full moon. It seems that the Show Me crew has run out of Rum from last year as they beat out Greg Archambault Nothin Doin for the top honors. Congratulation to Diane and Andy Forrest for the first win of the Rum Racing Season! Please see the attached scores.On Sunday March 8th, we were suppose to have the Tequila Run but it seems that everyone was too tired to compete. LAKE HARRIS SAILING CLUB
Dear Sailing Enthusiast,
Our last event was spectacular, we had great weather and a super time at our pot luck at the home of Bob & Julie Williams. They cooked hamburgers and hot dogs, and everyone brought a great assortment of sides and deserts.
We had a total of 19 people there and no one wanted to leave, with people staying until almost 3 PM.
After lunch I took Frank Willson and Dennis Anderson sailing on the Typhoon.
Our next event is next Tuesday, March 17, a lunch at Lake Harris Hideaway, formally Big John's.

To All Members and Friends of LMSA,Finally, day light savings is here and that means it is time for Wednesday Night Rum Racing. This Wednesday, March 11th will be the first race of 2009. Check in is by 6PM and all boats will be over the line by 6:30PM. Cruzan Rum has become the sponsor our entire 2009 Wednesday Night Rum racing season by offering a bottle of their rum to the winning boat.
Here is an added bonus this Wednesday Night. The Space Shuttle Discovery is scheduled to lift off by 9:20PM that evening. For those of you who have never seen a launch from the lake here is your opportunity. We believe that this will be the last night launch for the space shuttle program so you should check it out if you can.

Fickle winds both Saturday and Sunday tested the sailors at Lake Eustis Sailing Club. They managed to get in a full schedule of races, but needed an extra 2 hours of sailing on Sunday to do it.
In MC scow sailing David Moring was first, Jon Pomerleau was second, Don Francher was third and Candi Robb was the first woman.
Don Browning won the Flying Scot races with Francois Simon second and Ray Laguna third.
The Wayfarers were lead by Jim Lingeman with Dave Hepting second and Ted Benedict third.
Alejandro Illera won most of the Laser races with Sam Chapin second and Charlie Jensen third. Pearce Pomerleau was the first youth.
High School 420 teams raced on Saturday morning and practiced in the afternoon for a full day of sailing. In the racing Ben Getchell and Seth Bahr were first, Conner Kechriotis and Craig Yates second with Bart Eckhart and Jonathan Watson third.
Next week the sailing club will hold the Mid Winter Championship for the C scows and the Melges 17 boats with visitors from the cold North racing for the Championship. The following week is the MC scow Mid Winter Championship with an expected 90 boats.
Youth instructions and high school sailing will continue on Saturday.

MIDDLE OF THE WEEK THING
To all members and friends,As promised this weekend will be the Lake Monroe Sailing Association's overnight trip to Hontoon Island! Sorry for such a short notice on the activities but the Commodore, the vice Commodore and the Fleet Captain have had a busy two weeks. But enough for our sad stories, we will communicate better.We will be leaving the marina at noon on Saturday the 7th and head down the St. John's to Hontoon Island which is approximately 18 nautical miles. This will take 3.5 to 4 hours to motor there. We are suggesting that all of us stay in touch with each other by cell phone or radio if you have one. The slips cost $12.00 and will be well worth it.On the way back Sunday, there will be a Tequila Race from the last pylon's on the I-4 overpass to the Romance marks. Each sailor must keep his or hers own time and turn it in to Andy or Mike at Wolfy's. The winner will receive a bottle of Patron Silver!The phone committee will be contacting the membership to see who will be heading to Hontoon. LAKE EUSTIS SAILING CLUB.
The cold front of Sunday, March first, blew away the racing at the Lake Eustis Sailing Club before it got stated, but the brisk winds on Saturday, the last of February, left exciting racing for everyone.
Most fleets had big mixes in the finishes in the several races, but the eight boats of the Flying Scot Class finished both of their races in the same order each time. Larry Klick was first, Jack Bazner second and Don Browning third.
In the Wayfarer Fleet Andy Douma, visiting from Canada, was first, Jim Lingeman second and Jim McIntyre third.
David Moorhouse won the MC scow races with David Moring second and Scot Tillema third.
Randy Rea of Crystal River won most of the eight Laser races with Rob Krentel second and Alejandro Illera third. Darcy Jensen was the first youth and the first woman.
At Ferran Park for the Saturday morning George Fest activities, the advanced Optimist Pram class thrilled the crowd with a drill of seven boats capsized, righted, and bailed out. In the afternoon one 420 high school boat did the same, just before the canoe races.
Club racing will continue at the sailing club next week before the Mid Winter Regattas start in two weeks. Then many sailors from the frozen north will be visiting Lake Eustis for instructional clinics from the Melges Boat Company and a chance to take a break from ice boating.

Well folks, we missed you all on the water this Sunday! FYI, you missed the Mardi Gras cupcakes!!!
SailGator, Dauntless, & The Great Pumpkin showed up to play on the 'Great Lake Monroe'. I don't think I missed mentioning anyone, as the lake appeared more riddled with small fishing boats than Club Members! The forecast called for greater winds than there actually were.
After a few necessary replacements and repairs to the good 'ole Pumpkin, we headed out. Chris decided we would stay within the channel and make a run toward the bridge. Jerry and Kyle hung with us for a while, then left us to our own. As we approached the last marker prior to the bridge we entered some kind of crazy vortex. Wind, no wind, shifting wind, no wind. Tack, tack, tack, OMG!!!(My arm is still sore) I am praying, 'please don't make me do this all the way under the bridge to the other side'. Alas, the decision was made to come about. Now, looking into the East the Lake appeared as smooth as glass, except where we were. I thought to myself, it was due to this little vortex at the bridge. But as we sailed East, the wind seemed to be following. No, it was growing! Moving ever so swiftly ahead. And so it was, looking to the sky, that 'The Front' that had been promised was showing it's tail. Wow, what a fun little ride!!! It looked like SailGator saw its' approach and decided to put her sails back up. Dauntless was elusive all afternoon. It was now around 5pm or so. Since there seemed to be NO ONE to raft up with, we went in early and voted to go to the 'Willow Tree' for drink & food. Poor, lonely cupcakes!
There is a 'Chrome & Leather Bash' at the Museum of Florida Art in DeLand Friday night, and the DeLand Bike Fest is this Saturday on Mainstreet.
If we don't see you downtown, we'll catch you in March!

I get lost trying to find something on the "message board" of their web site. Maybe Linda or someone in the know will tell us what is happening. I assume the Clemens Cup still on for March 14 and 15 at Hickory Point.

Meetings still scheduled for Colonialtown Community Center, but I have been told that the meetings have moved to different location. The telephone numbers are on the newsletter and I recomemd calling someone if interested in lessons, teaching, racing, attending, or charter trips-- I think it is still going on.
